Las Vegas weather in March
Spring arrives: warm afternoons, cool nights, and the start of the windy season.
At a glance
The NWS Las Vegas office calls spring and fall the most ideal months, with one catch: wind. Strong winds from passing storm systems are most common in spring, usually out of the southwest or northwest, and on the worst days they carry blowing dust and sand. Temperatures can also swing sharply from one day to the next. A 90°F afternoon is possible but rare: March averages just 0.3 days that hot.
By NOAA’s 1991–2020 normals for Harry Reid International Airport, March days peak around 71°F and nights bottom out near 51°F. A 90°F day is unusual (0.3 in an average March). A freezing night at the airport is possible but uncommon (0.1 in an average year). Normal rainfall is 0.42 inches, with 2.8 days getting at least a hundredth of an inch and 1.3 days getting a tenth of an inch or more. The median March total is 0.17 inches, so in a typical year it is drier than the average suggests: a few wet years pull the average up.
Through the day
The comfortable window, when the normal temperature sits between 60°F and 85°F, runs roughly 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.. The day peaks around 4 p.m. at 70°F. By 9 p.m. it averages 63°F, and the coldest hour, around 7 a.m., averages 51°F.
| Time (PDT) | Normal | Cool day | Hot day |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 a.m. | 52°F | 44°F | 60°F |
| 9 a.m. | 57°F | 48°F | 65°F |
| Noon | 65°F | 54°F | 74°F |
| 3 p.m. | 69°F | 58°F | 80°F |
| 6 p.m. | 69°F | 57°F | 79°F |
| 9 p.m. | 63°F | 53°F | 72°F |
| Midnight | 58°F | 49°F | 67°F |
"Cool day" and "hot day" are NOAA’s 10th and 90th percentiles for that hour: one March day in ten is cooler or hotter than shown. NOAA publishes hourly normals in standard time; we shifted them to clock time for daylight saving time. Hourly averages run a little below the normal daily high because the hottest moment doesn’t land on the same hour every day.
The air is dry: the average dew point across the day is about 27°F, dry enough to chap lips and skin. Wind averages 8.6 mph over the day and is usually strongest around 6 p.m. (10.4 mph on average).
Over the month
March isn’t one temperature. The normal high climbs from 66.6°F on March 1 to 75.0°F on March 31, and the normal low goes from 47.2°F to 53.4°F. That 8.4° change is big enough that the start and end of the month feel different, so check the dates of your trip, not just the month.
For a specific date, the live National Weather Service forecast on our home page is more useful than any average once you are within a week of your trip.
What to pack
- Layers: a T-shirt for the afternoon, a fleece or jacket for the evening
- Sunscreen and sunglasses; the sun is getting stronger
- Something to cover your face and eyes on a dusty, windy day
- Comfortable walking shoes for long days outside
Staying safe
Wind and dust. Strong winds from passing storm systems are most common in spring and fall here, and the blowing dust can cut visibility on the roads. Secure anything loose on balconies or patios, and slow down or pull well off the road if dust gets thick.
