April is peak spring. Rain is uncommon and nights are comfortable. By the hourly normals, April and May are the breeziest months of the year, and the NWS says strong spring winds can kick up dust across the valley. It is one of the most comfortable months for hiking and outdoor plans, but the desert sun is already strong enough to burn by late morning.

By NOAA’s 1991–2020 normals for Harry Reid International Airport, April days peak around 79°F and nights bottom out near 57°F. 100°F is rare in April (0.0 days in an average year), but about 3.5 days reach 90°F. Normal rainfall is 0.20 inches, with 1.6 days getting at least a hundredth of an inch and 0.5 days getting a tenth of an inch or more. The median April total is 0.04 inches, so in a typical year it is drier than the average suggests: a few wet years pull the average up.

Through the day

The comfortable window, when the normal temperature sits between 60°F and 85°F, runs roughly Midnight to 11 p.m.. The day peaks around 4 p.m. at 77°F. By 9 p.m. it averages 70°F, and the coldest hour, around 6 a.m., averages 58°F.

"Cool day" and "hot day" are NOAA’s 10th and 90th percentiles for that hour: one April day in ten is cooler or hotter than shown. NOAA publishes hourly normals in standard time; we shifted them to clock time for daylight saving time. Hourly averages run a little below the normal daily high because the hottest moment doesn’t land on the same hour every day.

The air is dry: the average dew point across the day is about 26°F, dry enough to chap lips and skin. Wind averages 10.0 mph over the day and is usually strongest around 6 p.m. (12.1 mph on average).

Over the month

April isn’t one temperature. The normal high climbs from 75.2°F on April 1 to 82.4°F on April 30, and the normal low goes from 53.6°F to 60.9°F. That 7.2° change is big enough that the start and end of the month feel different, so check the dates of your trip, not just the month.

For a specific date, the live National Weather Service forecast on our home page is more useful than any average once you are within a week of your trip.

What to pack

  • Breathable short sleeves plus a light layer for the evening
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and a brimmed hat
  • A refillable water bottle for any time outdoors
  • A light windbreaker for gusty days

Staying safe

Wind and dust. Strong winds from passing storm systems are most common in spring and fall here, and the blowing dust can cut visibility on the roads. Secure anything loose on balconies or patios, and slow down or pull well off the road if dust gets thick.
