Month by month
Las Vegas weather in February
Still cool, and on average the wettest month of the year, though "wet" here means a handful of rainy days.
At a glance
February carries the most normal rainfall of any month, delivered mostly by Pacific storms that make it past the Sierra Nevada and the Spring Mountains. Those same mountains block most moisture, which is why Las Vegas is the driest major metro area in the continental U.S., according to the NWS. Days warm noticeably through the month. Storm systems can also bring gusty winds even when they bring no rain.
By NOAA’s 1991–2020 normals for Harry Reid International Airport, February days peak around 63°F and nights bottom out near 44°F. February doesn’t normally reach 90°F. Expect about 1.1 nights at or below freezing at the airport, and 9.0 nights under 40°F. Normal rainfall is 0.80 inches, with 4.1 days getting at least a hundredth of an inch and 2.1 days getting a tenth of an inch or more. The median February total is 0.39 inches, so in a typical year it is drier than the average suggests: a few wet years pull the average up.
Through the day
The comfortable window, when the normal temperature sits between 60°F and 85°F, runs roughly 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.. The day peaks around 3 p.m. at 62°F. By 9 p.m. it averages 53°F, and the coldest hour, around 6 a.m., averages 45°F.
| Time (PST) | Normal | Cool day | Hot day |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 a.m. | 45°F | 37°F | 53°F |
| 9 a.m. | 52°F | 44°F | 60°F |
| Noon | 59°F | 49°F | 68°F |
| 3 p.m. | 62°F | 52°F | 72°F |
| 6 p.m. | 58°F | 49°F | 68°F |
| 9 p.m. | 53°F | 45°F | 61°F |
| Midnight | 49°F | 42°F | 57°F |
"Cool day" and "hot day" are NOAA’s 10th and 90th percentiles for that hour: one February day in ten is cooler or hotter than shown. NOAA publishes hourly normals in standard time; we shifted them to clock time. Hourly averages run a little below the normal daily high because the hottest moment doesn’t land on the same hour every day.
The air is dry: the average dew point across the day is about 26°F, dry enough to chap lips and skin. Wind averages 7.3 mph over the day and is usually strongest around 3 p.m. (8.3 mph on average).
Over the month
February isn’t one temperature. The normal high climbs from 60.4°F on February 1 to 66.3°F on February 28, and the normal low goes from 41.9°F to 46.9°F. That 5.9° change is big enough that the start and end of the month feel different, so check the dates of your trip, not just the month.
For a specific date, the live National Weather Service forecast on our home page is more useful than any average once you are within a week of your trip.
What to pack
- A jacket for evenings, which are still chilly
- A light rain shell or compact umbrella in case a storm comes through
- Long sleeves and a layer for daytime
- Sunglasses: it is sunny between storms
Staying safe
Wind and dust. Strong winds from passing storm systems are most common in spring and fall here, and the blowing dust can cut visibility on the roads. Secure anything loose on balconies or patios, and slow down or pull well off the road if dust gets thick.
Cold nights. It doesn’t take snow to be dangerous. Desert nights cool fast, and outlying areas of the valley run colder than the airport. Bring a warm layer for any evening outdoors, and check road conditions before driving up to Mount Charleston.
